Venue Description:
In the heart of Orlando, heading south on Mills Street, you may turn left onto a short residential road called Greenwood Street. After passing about 500 feet of homes, you will enter the 19 acres of Greenwood Wetlands Park. Continuing another 900 feet along its southern edge, you will see on your left a pristine grassy field sloping down into Greenwood Lake, surrounded by tall cypress trees. A cement footpath, followed by a bridge, leads to a peaceful island where you are alone with your thoughts, interrupted only by an occasional dog walker. This is an appropriate place for the entrance to Orlando’s Greenwood Cemetery.
The cemetery itself is the burial place of many of Orlando’s war veterans, among other citizens, and it is visited by more than just family members of the dead. Bird watchers and wildlife photographers are frequent visitors, as bald eagles are often seen soaring overhead, perching on a nearby cell tower, along with other wildlife that inhabit the surrounding wetlands.
Meeting Spot:
1411 Greenwood St, Orlando, FL 32801.
If you are coming from north of Orlando, head down 17-92, which becomes Mills St. as it enters Orlando. You will cross Colonial Drive (highway 50). Continue and cross Robinson and veer to the right and follow Thornton, which joins Mills. Travel a few more blocks, go under the 408 and you will see Greenwood Street on your left. Meet your instructor in the parking lot of the Greenwood Cemetery.
