REP3 aka Robert Erving Potter, III, specializes in photographing the creative process with insight and passion. His work is about people and their creative endeavors. Art in it’s creation, Art as a byproduct of creation, and the Human interaction with Art. Robert forges a unique relationship between the witness and the maker of art. This shows in his body of work. Robert’s intent is to spark an emotional experience in those who see the images he creates.
Robert Erving Potter III is a founding ensemble Member of The Piccolo Theatre: an ensemble theatre company with foundation in Commedia dell’ Arte. Robert funds his creative endeavors as owner of REP3.com, a Photographic Art Studio that creates Theatrical Promotional Photographs for Press, Publicity, PR, Editorial & Advertising. Subjects include Dance, Art, Theatre, Fashion, and Film. Robert studied at Interlochen Arts Academy where he was trained in the visual art of photography, as well as theatrical improvisation. The European phase of Mr. Potters education started in 1976 with the European Tour of the jazz band Weather Report where he was lighting director. He later returned to England to study photography and Shakespeare at Cambridge University, where he was awarded membership to both the Cambridge University Photographic Society and Thespian Society. Mr. Potter studied under George Strimbu at Valparaiso University where he received the Bachelor of Science in Fine Arts degree; graduating with honors and distinction.
After studying at the International Center of Photography under Cornell Capa and at LIFE magazine with Alfred Eisenstaedt in New York City, Mr. Potter returned home to Chicago where he specializes in photographing the creative process. His clients and subjects have included such luminaries as Stephen Colbert, Jeff Garlin, Claire Bataille, James Belushi, John Malkovich, Wil Clinger, Chris Farley, Bonnie Hunt, Isabella Hoffman, Robert Bly and Prime Minister Wilson. His corporate clients include: the LookingGlass Theatre, Donner & Company LLC, Piccolo Theatre, The Second City and Goodman Theater, 3Com, Texas Instruments, Warner Brothers, CBS, Paramount Productions, Kodak and Polaroid. Mr. Potter is internationally published his images have appeared in Chicago Magazine, People, Esquire, Iui, Gentleman’s Quarterly, Elle, First For Women, Actuel and San Actuel magazines.
For ten years Mr. Potter coordinated the Lakeview Church of Christ volunteer group at the Inspiration Café, where respect and hope is served up to the homeless, along with a nutritious meal. The Café’s mission is to foster independence and promote wellness among it’s guests & staff. Most recently, Robert served the photographic community as the photographer liaison to the board of directors of the Midwest chapter of the American Society of Picture Professionals (ASPP). He is President emeritus of the Chicago Midwest chapter of ASMP (the American Society of Media Photographers) and is a member in good standing of APA (Advertising Photographers of America) and a past member of EP (Editorial Photographers).
