Welcome to the Philadelphia market for the international network of live and online photo classes, all under the banner of Digital Photo Academy.
This section is devoted to our Philadelphia photo workshops. The DPA Instructors who lead these workshops are professional photographers who have lived in Philadelphia for at least 10 years, usually longer.
These pro shooters also have teaching experience and they love teaching. (Not all photographers do.) They know the local retailers where you can get the better deals on photo equipment and more importantly, they know where the best photo ops are which allows us to provide you with a rotation of interesting places to shoot, throughout the year, whether indoors or outdoors, winter, spring, summer or fall. Sometimes one time of day to shoot is better than another and our DPA instructors keep us informed.
About Our Philadelphia Photo Workshop Venues
Often, the DPA Instructors even have private access to various locales in the city where they live. Themes vary from street photography and dynamic architecture, to flowers and landscapes, as well as waterscapes, sunsets, lush scenery and everything in between.
During one month, you might be invited to rendezvous in the luxurious natural light streaming in to a religious venue via spectacular stained glass windows and the following month, it might be a small relatively unknown park with very special landscapes. This is why we offer a special ALUMNI Discount to people who attend more than one workshop.
Nationally, we organize these workshops to provide variety for the participants in each local market, but we could not do it without the expertise and connections provided by the DPA instructors in each of those markets.
Phone the national headquarters of Digital Photo Academy at 1 877 372 2231 but know that each of the Digital Photo Academy markets includes a local office. In Philadelphia, that office is at:
226 W Rittenhouse Sq Apt 706 Philadelphia, PA 19103-7604

it was awesome, all questions were answered. thanks to Mimi’s instructions I saw an immediate improvement in my photos. Mimi is indeed a magician, she was a tremendous instructor. Only wish is that we had more time.

The DPA team has to coordinate the DPA workshops across the whole country; which I imagine entails a lot of names. Your national office team members and the folks who teach where they live do a wonderful job. That’s why I keep coming back!

Everything was fantastic! Carl was a great instructor. We learned a lot about our specific camera as well as the different elements that make a good picture. After leaving, we spent the rest of the day looking at and taking pictures. We look forward to attending another class in the future.
Thanks for everything!
Scott Breakstone
Thank you. Sessions were very helpful.

Hi Carl, thank you so much for my very informative lesson yesterday! I am so pleased with how much I learned. I knew nothing about the camera or the controls before the lesson, and already feel like I have a much better understanding. I am so excited to get practicing and will definitely be looking to take the lightroom class in 2024, hopefully in January time.

Hi Carl,
Thank you for your time teaching me today. It was a pleasure to work with you. You explained things very well. It was very helpful to have an instructor to answer questions on the spot.
I will apply the knowledge I learned today in my side gig. I’m still in the process of setting up my studio. I will definitely reach out to you when I’m ready for the next lesson.
Thank you Richard for coordinating everything. I appreciate the clear communication from you.
Best,

Hi Richard,
I just want to let you know that yesterday’s class with Carl and Mimi was perfect; just what I wanted. They are both excellent teachers, as well as talented photographers. They were so patient, willing to repeat information as much as I needed, but also able to challenge me to try new things. I’m excited to sign up for additional courses and thrilled that you’ve brought DPA to Philly. Thanks,
Robert Muzikar

“I’m an old person who still loves film photography, but my daughter and her husband started to push me to do digital photography in the last few years. Last year they set me up for a session at Liberty State Park, which I enjoyed very much. So this year they followed up with another session at Seaside Heights. I took that class yesterday and enjoyed it also, and in particular I would like to comment on the great job your instructor did. Bill Blanchard was the instructor and was as patient as a saint in heading his students in the proper direction to take good pictures. I could make this a long letter about his patience and sincere caring about our getting something from the class, but I will just say thanks to his attitude I will be following up on additional instruction from your organization. ”

“I was so nervous about taking the course and making the best of what would be taught . When I met Phil, the instructor , he was so nice and calmed me down so I could concentrate and actually learn what he was teaching ! Phil taught at my level and speed . He knows everything about photography and only shared what I was ready to learn , giving extra tips here and there . I am going to be practicing what he taught and when I’m ready , I will return for the next class taught by Phil .
Thank you Richard, for seeing me through to this point . You have been a great help . And you have a great school . Even though Lambertsville was a trip, it’s a quant town to visit and a great excuse to get out of town !”
Thanx so much ,

“Thanks for your time and effort at the class this past Saturday. Although a lot of what you had to say was, refresher, I did learn about “Leading Lines” from you. I have never heard the concept expressly stated, although it may have been and I just missed. Makes sense though. Your portrait example out there in the yard can be very helpful to me as I tend to the side of what I shoot is what I get in portraiture. Well, it’s not so much portraiture as it is family snapshots. At any rate, thanks so much. I hope we cross paths again. I hope we all cross paths again.
So here are a few of the shots from Saturday. Please feel fre to critique, all of you. I can only get better if I know what I did not accomplish with my images”
-Frank Sylvis.

“I really enjoyed today’s class and am attaching some of my shots, some of which I have edited with the Aviary app for iPad. Although I was not able to practice most of the features you discussed, I really enjoyed learning about leading lines and framing and playing with the ISO and White balance!
I will definitely take more classes in the future and will likely purchase a better camera!! Do you have any suggestions for beginner models I should look into?”

“Thanks again for the great class yesterday. Here are a few of my favorites from yesterday. One is the upward perspective shot of the tree. I love the dramatic black and white treatment of the statue on your picture!
I am sending you over a few of my favorites. I’m still learning post production and want to learn how to manipulate lightroom a lot better than I do – that’s more of a factor of time than anything else.

“Thank you for a fantastic workshop in Princeton yesterday! I learned a lot and had a huge amount of fun. It was a good group of people and certainly a photogenic setting. The tips on leading lines were great, as were the tips on framing. I have started to go back over the pictures I took and was reminded that I got a couple of images that were, in effect, double-framed. I had a window behind a window, which wound up looking pretty cool.
I may post a couple to the DPA website.
I’m looking forward to taking more of these workshops and learning still more. Oh, and I already ordered a set of the close-up filters and can’t wait to play with them. Good stuff.
Hope to see you at a future workshop!”

“Sunday past was Father’s Day and what better way to start it than with a DPA class!! I attended the Photo Session in Philadelphia’s Rittenhouse Square with Armond Scarvo. Being taught by Armond was a real treat as he’s a highly accomplished photographer and a fantastic instructor. His knowledge of Philadelphia and the Rittenhouse Square was only surpassed by his knowledge of photography. Simply amazing!! I really liked Armond’s instruction style as he first made sure students were comfortable with the basics of their camera, and then following a brief discussion on composition, he turned everyone loose. I think a few students were uncomfortable with going out so quickly but that was the beauty of it. The process really challenged students to shoot things in a way that resonates with them, not the way their instructor or someone else does; and actually after 30 minutes everyone was clicking away. Throughout the day Armond gave students pointers on everything from lenses to HDR to framing techniques. I particularly appreciated his ability to address and challenge students at their respective level. One of the takeaways that he gave me was to move my eye around the edge of the viewfinder, to make sure that the composition only includes subject matter that aids in the story being conveyed. I’ve heard this before but Armond really brought it to light for me and I’ve been doing it consistently since. I also enjoyed this group of students. Although we were at various levels, there was a nice bonding that took place and I would suspect that some of us will get together again to shoot other parts of the city. At least I hope so… hint, hint guys!! Oh, Armond mentioned trying to get a DPA session for another part of the Philly area. If he succeeds, sign me up!! Thanks Armond!! ”

I couldn’t decide between these 12, so I hope you don’t mind a couple extra. I’ve noticed you see things that I can’t quite put my finger on, so just choose your favorite 5-10 to comment on. I look forward to your feedback and suggestions! I put them up on a Flickr set, but let me know if you have trouble or would like the files. ”

“I attended a class at Rittenhouse Square, Philadelphia today with Armond Scavo.
It was a great experience; he mainly dealt with HDR techniques using bracketing shots, but he occasionally taught other aspects as well if we had questions or he thought there were things that could improve our shots. I edited all my photos from today and I must say I’m very satisfied. Thank you and Armond again for this great experience, and I hope to attend other classes of DPA again in the future.”
