Eric-Sahlin-bio-picEric was been fascinated with photography since the day his father set up a darkroom in their house. He was a sophomore in high school and that was the year of his eye-opening, first trip to Europe. He was intrigued to see that light bouncing off an object could be actually captured and fixed, frozen in time, on film and paper with a little mechanical help from a camera and chemical help from silver halide.

From a teenage shutterbug, he became a UC Berkeley graduate (1983) with an interdisciplinary major in film. He went on to the American Film Institute where he studied film producing and production. Whether still or moving, images became a mainstay of his focus.

As Eric Sahlin Photography, He’s been shooting architectural, commercial, editorial and travel/scenic photography in the San Francisco, Bay Area for 16 years. He served as President of the Northern California chapter of the American Society of Media Photographers and has been shooting, directing, and editing commercial videos as well.

“Professional photography is inherently a mixture of business and art. It relies upon a strong aesthetic for interpretation while simultaneously being bound by time and economic constraints. Successful photography rides that thin line between the two without looking as if it was detrimentally influenced by either.”

In 1995, he had the opportunity to fulfill a lifelong dream of traveling the world -circumnavigating the globe, West-wise. Eight months and eighteen countries later, he returned to the Bay Area with thousands of photographs. This rare opportunity was much like graduate field work, providing the opportunity to hone both the artistic and technical skills in varied and often unusual situations.

“Keeping current with the new technologies is critical to success in business and ability to produce professional Images for the demanding market.”

At Adobe Systems as a multimedia producer/art director, Eric produced animations and videos for some of their flagship products including Photoshop, Lightroom, Dreamweaver, and Acrobat.

Lots of people seem to hang up if our welcome recording comes on instead of a live voice, but we promise to return your message within a day or two if you leave one with your name and number.  It would be even better if you included your e mail address as well as the date and city of the class you are considering.  If leaving a voice mail message is not your thing, please email us at DPAbooking@digitalphotoacademy.com or Richard@digitalphotoacademy.com.

  1. “I just wanted to let you know I have taken two of Erics classes. The first class was architectural photography in Oakland, it was very informative and fun. Eric was always there to help with the camera set up and help explain the lighting throughout the day. The second class I missed because I forgot my phone at home and there was a problem at the meeting place. Eric was great enough to email me and we set up for a few days later for me to make up the class. This is a total of 4 classes so far with DPA and I intend to take more, hopefully if I am free, I want to take Erics North Beach class.”
